The Human of the Year Awards is an initiative of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC). The awards for outstanding contribution to the human rights sphere was presented for the first time on 10 December, 2008 and has numerous nominations.
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee was established in 1992 as an independent non-governmental organisation for the protection of human rights. BHC conducts systematic monitoring of the human rights situation in the country in a number of priority areas: the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, refugees and asylum-seekers, rights of the child, protection from torture and ill-treatment, freedom of expression and association, access to information, the conditions of people in closed institutions, problems of the criminal justice system. The BHC offers free legal help to the victims of human rights abuses and words towards raising awareness regarding human rights issues.
